What I am really interested in right now is a dance between seemingly opposite things. It is a delicate balance between looseness and control, flatness and dimension, flat space and deep space, abstraction and representation, larger brushstrokes/areas of color and smaller details.
I like words and I enjoy writing and therefore it makes sense that I typically like to title my artwork. Sometimes I have a great title in mind before the artwork has barely begun. More often it arrives as I am working on the piece and will bounce around in my head in various iterations until the piece is finished.
In my previous post I spoke of my desire to be looser and less refined in my brushwork. Over the past few years I have actually had the opportunity to practice being looser while painting and I imagine this has to have had some influence in the way I am approaching my new work.
I am talking about the process of painting. My work is headed in a new direction and while it has been something that I have been thinking about for quite some time, trying to figure out how to bring these ideas into my paintings has been a daunting challenge.
